Beloved Architect of Identity,
I used to think some dreams were just too big.
Too complicated. Too expensive. Too out of reach.
Like this one:
Seeing the gray whales and their calves in one of their birthing lagoons in Mexico.
Hold on, Ruth, what are you talking about? Let me explain.
Gray whales travel up to 14,000 miles round-trip each year. From Alaska down to Baja California, Mexico, to give birth in sheltered lagoons. The longest mammal migration on the planet.
Living in Southern California, I’d seen them pass by on their journey. I’d even taken whale-watching cruises. But going to the lagoons, the place where they actually give birth, felt… impossible.
Remote location. No infrastructure. Price tags in the thousands.
So the dream sat on my bucket list, untouched.
And I told myself the same story you’ve probably heard before:
“Some dreams are just not realistic.”
Still, it kept circling in my head. What if?
Then one day, scrolling Facebook, I saw an ad from a small Mexican company offering land tours to the Ojo de Liebre lagoon. Not a private plane. Not luxury pricing. Just… a possibility.
I messaged them. The organizer said, “If you pay the deposit and show up at the meeting point, you’re in.” No guarantees. The whales might not show. The seas might be rough. The trip might be a bust.
But a month later, we were driving down the Baja peninsula, joining strangers for the ride.
Day 1: 450 miles in a van.
Day 2: a small boat on gray, choppy waters.
For 25 minutes, nothing. Just queasy stomach and doubt.
This was a mistake. I can’t do this for 3 more hours.
And then, cheers erupted from a nearby boat.
The whales had arrived.
Towering, gentle giants, 3–4 times bigger than our boat. Swimming right next to us. Mothers lifting their calves on their backs to show them off to us humans.
No one knows why they do it.
But it felt like the kindest gift I’ve ever received.
My “impossible” dream wasn’t impossible after all.
It just required patience, research, and a leap of faith, even when there were no guarantees.
And it made me wonder:
👉 Do you have a dream sitting on your “impossible” list?
👉 Have you looked for a simpler way to make it happen?
👉 And would you go for it, even if success wasn’t guaranteed?
Here’s what I learned out there on that rough gray sea:
Impossible dreams often aren’t impossible.
We just haven’t found the simple way in yet.
So keep believing. Keep preparing. Keep your eyes open for the moment.
Because one day, the opportunity will appear, unexpectedly.
And when it does, your only job is to say yes.
The dream is waiting.
I’m rooting for you always,
Ruth
Reflect
- What dream have you quietly labeled “impossible” because it feels too expensive, complicated, or unlikely?
- If the opportunity showed up tomorrow, would you be ready, or would you need to scramble?
Reframe
Old belief: Impossible dreams are out of reach, they’re only for the lucky or the wealthy.
New belief: Impossible dreams aren’t impossible. They just require patience, creativity, and preparation before the opportunity appears.
Actionable Transformation
- Name your dream clearly. Write down exactly what it is, even if it feels far-fetched. Clarity unlocks pathways.
- Find one alternate path. Research: is there a simpler, less obvious way to get there? Cheaper, slower, or local opportunities often exist.
- Prepare in advance. Save a small fund, block time, or gather resources so when the chance comes, you can say yes without hesitation.
