What job is your income doing?

Beloved Architect of Identity,

I almost said no to extra money.

Recently, I was offered a small opportunity to do some extra work from home.

Five hours a week. Two months. A pretty good hourly rate.

It sounds like a no-brainer.

Except I don't believe more work is automatically better.

I already have a full-time job, a business, and responsibilities. My time is incredibly valuable to me.

And I'm definitely not interested in sacrificing my health, habits, or life just to squeeze more productivity out of myself.

So I had to ask a different question: What would this extra work make possible?

That changed my decision.

I realized I could take those extra earnings and give them a job. I could invest them. Pay additional principal on my house. Rebuild my emergency fund after an expensive move.

In other words, I could use a small amount of my capacity today to create resources that may reduce how much of my capacity I have to sell tomorrow.

That's a very different reason to work.

I've been laid off before. I've watched friends lose jobs.

I've seen health problems reduce someone's ability to earn almost overnight.

And in my first business, I watched 2020, and later AI, completely change industries. People I knew who had run businesses for 10 or 15 years eventually returned to full-time jobs.

I don't say that pessimistically.

I say it because I've learned not to assume today's capacity, income, or opportunities will always be available tomorrow.

There is tremendous value in appreciating what we can produce today, and then converting some of that value into something that can outlive the work.

Until next time, keep blooming,

Ruth

Reflect

Ask yourself: What job is my income doing besides funding my current life?

And: If I didn't need every dollar I earned to support my lifestyle, what would become possible?

Maybe you'd work less, take bigger creative risks, help your family, give more, or build something meaningful without needing it to immediately pay you back.

Reframe

I used to think about work mostly as an exchange: Time → work → money → life

Now I see another possibility: Time → work → money → assets → options

The goal isn't necessarily to work more. It's to make more of today's work survive today's paycheck.

Actionable Transformation

Take one source of income, even a small one, and ask:

  1. What percentage can I keep from becoming lifestyle?
  2. Where could I funnel it so it strengthens my future?
  3. What could I build today that gives me more choices tomorrow?

It doesn't have to be perfect. I certainly didn't start perfectly. I made plenty of mistakes. But little by little, I learned to stop seeing income only as money to live on.

P.S. One of the best questions I’ve learned to ask isn’t, “How can I make more money?” It’s, “How much of the money I make today can I turn into future options?” Those are two very different games.
